The area of Salnés, with the Arousa and Pontevedra rivers provide excellent natural conditions for the breeding of both fish and shellfish. For centuries important economic activities have developed, based on the exploitation of its natural resourses. With the years, these activities have generated a notable maritime heritage culture.

This area, the heart of the Rias Baixes, shares its fishing strengths with the development of an important tourist trade, based around its beautiful beaches and open spaces, the most outstanding of which being the National Park of the Atlantic Islands (Parque Nacional das Illas Atlánticas), its rich gastronomy, and famed albariños wines.

The Regional Foundation of Salnés, with the Commonwealth of Salnés and together with the Town halls of Cambados, Vilagarcia de Arousa, Vilanova de Arousa, A Illa de Arousa, Sanxenxo, O Grove, Méis, Meaño and Ribadumia, have created a new tourist product, based around its maritime heritage, and the typical jobs done by the fishing community. In this way, visitors can participate in sea related tasks, get familiar with traditional ways of sailing, the arts associated with fishing, the canning industry, the way of life of the fishing community, etc.
